How to View the Solar Eclipse Without Glasses
Using a Colander or Pasta Strainer
A colander, also known as a pasta strainer, is another way to view the eclipse without glasses. Simply hold it about 20 feet from a white surface and look at the projected image of the eclipse. This method is simple and safe, but it does not provide as clear of a view as some other methods.
Another option is to use a pinhole camera. To make a pinhole camera, you will need a piece of cardboard, a needle, and a piece of aluminum foil. First, poke a small hole in the center of the aluminum foil. Then, tape the aluminum foil over the hole in the cardboard. Finally, point the pinhole camera at the sun and look at the projected image of the eclipse on a white surface.
Using Binoculars or a Telescope
If you have binoculars or a telescope, you can use them to view the eclipse. However, it is important to use a solar filter to protect your eyes. Solar filters are available for purchase online or at most camera stores.
Using Your Hands
You can also use your hands to view the eclipse. To do this, take both hands and overlap your fingers with one hand vertical and the other horizontal. This works the same way as a colander or pinhole camera, but instead of using a bunch of little holes, it uses just one.
No matter which method you choose, be sure to take precautions to protect your eyes. Never look directly at the sun without eye protection.
